SAP ECC mainstream support ends in 2027: a GCC S/4HANA plan

SAP ECC mainstream maintenance ends in 2027. What 2030 and 2035 mean, what the fallbacks cost, and a practical S/4HANA roadmap for GCC leaders.

The short answer: SAP will provide mainstream maintenance for SAP Business Suite 7 core applications, including SAP ERP 6.0 (ECC), until the end of 2027. Optional extended maintenance runs from 2028 to the end of 2030 at an extra cost (SAP Support). For the largest estates, SAP now says its paid transition option may run to 31 December 2035, with further prerequisites (SAP News). Every fallback costs more. For most organisations still on ECC, the S/4HANA decision belongs in 2026, not 2027.

Below: the dates, the options after 2027, what recent surveys say about migrations, and a practical roadmap for finance, IT and operations leaders in the UAE and the wider GCC.

The dates that matter

SAP's published maintenance strategy is clear on three points (SAP Support):

  • End of 2027: mainstream maintenance ends for Business Suite 7 core applications, covering the latest three enhancement packages of SAP ERP 6.0 and related products.
  • 2028 to 2030: customers in longer conversion phases can choose extended maintenance, which comes at a premium of two percentage points on the maintenance basis (SAP Support).
  • After that: customers who do not take extended maintenance, or whose extended maintenance has ended, move to customer-specific maintenance.

On the other side of the move, SAP has an innovation commitment for SAP S/4HANA until the end of 2040 (SAP Support).

The transition option: 2033, and possibly 2035

SAP also offers a time-bound subscription called SAP ERP, private edition, transition option. It is aimed at its largest and most complex customers who cannot finish by 2030. SAP's published conditions include (SAP News):

  • Systems must be migrated to SAP ERP, private edition on SAP HANA before 31 December 2030.
  • SAP HANA is the only supported database, and there is a minimum system size of 2 TB.
  • It is priced at an uplift. Customers signing up for SAP ERP, private edition in 2026 receive a standard 20 per cent uplift when switching to the transition option in 2031. For sign-ups in 2027 or later, SAP has not yet disclosed the uplift, and the max success plan fee comes on top (SAP News).

The offering was first announced for business continuity from 2031 to 2033. SAP updated its page on 13 October 2026: subscriptions "may run until December 31, 2035 (with further prerequisites)" with details in SAP Note 3591251 (SAP News). Treat it as a paid safety net with its own prerequisites, not a reason to delay. Check the current conditions with SAP before you rely on them.

How migrations are going

Two 2026 studies give a useful reality check.

Deployment is not the same as completion. In SAPinsider's 2026 benchmark of 296 community members, surveyed between December 2025 and March 2026, 55% reported completing an SAP S/4HANA or S/4HANA Cloud deployment, but only 34% said they had completed the transition. A further 13% said they will not complete their move until after 2027, and 6% had no plans to switch (SAPinsider). The report also warns of "a significant resource bottleneck over the next two to three years" as organisations try to finish.

Budgets and timelines slip. Research from ISG, reported by The Register, found that nearly 60% of SAP migration projects are delayed and over budget. In the same survey of 200 senior decision-makers, 49% carried out little or no re-engineering. On approach, 34% were choosing brownfield migrations, 18% greenfield and nearly half a mix of the two (The Register).

The pattern is consistent: the hard parts are scope, data and people, not the technical conversion itself.

Why the GCC timing is tighter than it looks

GCC organisations face the same SAP dates as everyone else, plus local pressures on the same ERP teams.

  • Regulatory change lands in the ERP. In the UAE, businesses in scope of e-invoicing with Revenue of AED 50 million or more must implement the system by 1 January 2027, and smaller businesses by 1 July 2027 (MD 244 of 2025 as amended, tax.gov.ae). That work touches invoicing, master data and integrations, the same areas an S/4HANA programme will change. Our UAE e-invoicing ERP readiness checklist covers the detail.
  • Competition for skills. In an August 2025 forecast, Gartner said MENA software spending was expected to "grow 13.9% to $20.4 billion in 2026", with IT services spending "projected to grow 8.3% in 2026" (Gartner). More projects chasing the same experienced people makes late starts more expensive.

The practical conclusion: plan e-invoicing and S/4HANA together, so that changes made for one are not undone by the other.

A practical S/4HANA roadmap

1. Establish the facts (weeks, not months)

  • Inventory your SAP estate: instances, enhancement package levels, database, interfaces and custom code.
  • Confirm your current maintenance position and contract renewal dates.
  • Run SAP's readiness tooling to size custom code and data issues.
  • Map regulatory deadlines (e-invoicing, VAT and Corporate Tax reporting) against the same calendar.

2. Choose the path deliberately

There are three broad approaches, and each has a cost:

ApproachWhat it meansMain trade-off
GreenfieldRe-implement on standard S/4HANA processesMost business change, most long-term simplification
BrownfieldConvert the existing system, keeping processes and historyFastest technically, carries old customisation forward
Selective (hybrid)Move some processes and data, redesign othersFlexible, but needs strong scope control

The ISG findings above suggest many organisations default to brownfield to save time, then struggle with scope anyway. Decide which processes genuinely differentiate your business and which should move to standard.

3. Fix the data early

Data quality decides go-live dates. Start cleansing customer, supplier and material master data now, with clear owners in finance and operations. The same clean master data is needed for e-invoicing, so the effort pays off twice.

4. Decide your deployment and commercial model

Compare on-premises, private cloud and public cloud options on total cost, control, data residency and upgrade cadence. If there is any chance you will need SAP's transition option, note that it requires a move to SAP ERP, private edition on SAP HANA before the end of 2030, and that the pricing uplift depends on when you sign (SAP News).

5. Plan for testing, cutover and hypercare

Allow time for integration testing with banks, tax systems and e-invoicing providers, at least one full rehearsal of cutover, and a defined hypercare period with named owners for finance close, order-to-cash and procure-to-pay.

For more on ERP programmes, see our Enterprise Applications page.

6. Govern scope like a budget

Agree a change control process before the programme starts. The ISG research links delays to underestimated complexity, expanding scope and internal constraints, all of which a firm change process helps to contain.

Questions to answer at your next steering committee

  • Which of our systems are covered by mainstream maintenance today, and what does extended maintenance cost us from 2028?
  • Is our preferred approach greenfield, brownfield or selective, and who owns that decision?
  • Which regulatory changes will hit our ERP before go-live, and are they in the same plan?
  • Do we have named owners for master data in every business unit?
  • If we slip past 2030, are we eligible for the transition option, and what would it cost?

The bottom line

The end of 2027 is not a cliff for every system, because extended maintenance and the transition option exist. But each fallback adds cost and conditions. Organisations that use 2026 and 2027 to settle the facts, choose a path and clean their data will have more options, not fewer.
